Mother Remedy (2022)
Acrylic on Canvas
24” x 30”
"Mother Remedy" is an exploration of the complex and deeply personal journey that women navigate when contemplating motherhood. Drawing inspiration from the archetype of the Virgin Mother, the painting reimagines the traditional halo with birth control pills, symbolizing the modern woman's agency over her reproductive choices.
Central to the composition is the Virgin Mother, her heart replaced by the evocative imagery of the 3 of Swords tarot card. This symbolic choice encapsulates the multifaceted emotions experienced by women in the throes of the internal debate on whether to embrace motherhood or follow alternate paths. The 3 of Swords signifies not only the potential sorrow of missing out on the experience of motherhood but also the poignant ache that arises from not fully immersing oneself in personal passions, pursuits, and worldly adventures.
Surrounding the central figure are depictions of natural contraceptives, reinforcing the theme of choice and the diverse array of options available to women. This juxtaposition of birth control and natural elements serves as a visual metaphor for the intricate decision-making process and the delicate balance between embracing maternal instincts and pursuing individual aspirations.
"Mother Remedy" invites viewers into a contemplative space, encouraging a reflection on the complexities and choices inherent in the journey of womanhood. The painting aims to foster empathy and understanding for the emotional landscape of the profound decisions surrounding motherhood and self-fulfillment.
